Organic Farmers on the Offensive Against Monsanto

The preemptive action was filed March 29, 2011 to prevent Monsanto from being able to sue them on patent infringement when or if their crops are contaminated by the patented seeds from Monsanto. However the statements in the cases suggest it is more about the political, social, and ethical battle by organic farmers fighting against genetically modified foods/plants Monsanto creates.

Nanotechnology Hits Washington Lawyer Magazine

The March 2011 Washington Lawyer magazine article "Nanotechnology: Small Science, Huge Hurdles" is the cover page article written by Sarah Kellogg. The article is also found online at http://www.dcbar.org/for_lawyers/resources/publications/washington_lawyer/march_2011/nanotechnology.cfm. Definitely worth a read for the legal and ethical issues facing Nanotechnology.

Senate Passes Patent Office Reforms, Still Waiting for House

A simple search creates a multitude of hits on the proposed patent reform bill that the Senate has passed. I'm not sure how I feel about this bill. It removes the first to invent statute to be replaced by a first to file system. This is a huge change in the US system but more in line with the world. There are plenty of good arguments on both sides. Administratively it is definitely easier to have a first to file system and this also lessens litigation. However this definitely benefits larger manufactures/companies in some ways. Less litigation and more certainty will probably prevail over whatever nostalgia there is for the traditional US first to invent system.

US needs to stay on top

"Pharma chief: Europe must not fall behind US, emerging countries"

I like the advice that he gives on staying successful in the Pharma area, and it certainly applies generally creating more scientific innovation in the US.

"Listen to what the leaders of the industry say. Make sure you're close to that. Be resilient. Why? Things in this town take a long time. You can't get something changed in a year." ... "So you're in it for the long run. That does mean you need a sense of vision too. What is it you want to see? I think the guiding light to me is being able to identify and pursue things that will help Europe. It's not just the industry. The infrastructure for innovation and research in Europe, that's the light you need to follow."
